PostHeaderIcon Aquarium & Fish Keeping Tips

The origin of aquarium keeping can be traced back to thousands of years before. Ancient Sumerians kept fish in artificial ponds almost 4500 years ago; even the ancient Romans and Chinese people had the same hobby meant for entertainment. In numerous ancient cultures, fish was considered to be sacred for their beauty and agility. Even today, we love keeping aquariums, wondering regarding the source from where an amazing aquarium can be purchased.

I have noticed that when some people start out with a new aquarium they really don’t take into mind that a little research is necessary to maintain a clean tank and keep healthy fish. I was one of those people who thought it just involved setting up the tank and throwing the fish in and that was it. However, you will find from experience that keeping fish shouldn’t be taken lightly and I believe it is important to have some good fish advice before starting out or even while maintaining your fish aquariums.

I’d have to say the thing that disgusts me the most is some people really don’t look at keeping fish seriously. If you screw up, they can be replaced. If they suffer, they are just fish. But in my opinion, it is important to know how to maintain a healthy tank and how to care for the fish. They are a pet and shouldn’t be mistreated as with any type of animal.

This is why I thought it might be nice to offer some of my own tips that I have gained through knowledge and experience with keeping tropical fish.

5 Tips For Setting Up Your First Aquarium:

1. Perform regular maintenance on your filter to keep it clean

2. Properly treat all tap water before adding it to your aquarium

3. Rapid pH changes stress fish. Keep the pH of your aquarium’s water stable

4. Select fish that are native to waters having similar chemical properties (pH and GH) to your local tap water

5. Choose the fish to fit your aquarium: A fish needs enough space to swim freely, but the size of the aquarium and the temperature of the water also affect oxygen content and will determine the number of fish that you can held. lower oxygen levels mean fewer fish. The depth of the aquarium is not relevant to the oxygen content calculations; it is the surface area of the water that is important. Coldwater and all marine fishes consume proportionally more oxygen than their fellows freshwater fishes.

The winter season can be a dangerous time for your pets and they need special care and attention during this time. Firstly, ensure that if your pet sleeps outside the house, that he/she has a warm spot to sleep in. Pets can succumb to very cold weather and risk catching a chill. Ensure that your dogs kennel does not bear the onslaught of the wind and faces against it. If your dogs kennel is just small enough to give him/her space to get up, turn and lie down, then it is likely to be warm in the winter.

Secondly, ensure that your pet is drinking adequate fluids and is eating a nourishing meal as the cold could lead to dehydration. Give your dog or cat a warm drinking bowl with water as frequently as possible. Thirdly, your pet could be suffering from dry skin on account of the dry air during winter. One effective way to solve this problem is to brush frequently, try an oatmeal shampoo or provide your pet with fatty acid supplements. Fourth, ensure that your parked car does not have any cats or other animals that are sleeping under it. The engines warmth attracts many animals and you should be careful to avoid a fateful accident.

Fifth, certain kinds of anti freeze chemicals used on pavements and in cars can lead to fatal consequences for your pet. Pets can be poisoned to death by such chemicals and you should keep them safe by practicing washing of paws after a trip outdoors. Sixth, your pet could injure his/her tongue by getting it stuck on a metal bucket or bowl in extremely cold weather. To avoid this, in the winter, switch to a plastic or ceramic bowl to minimize the threat to your pet. Seventh, pets face a serious danger from frostbite and so you should ensure that they dont retain any snow on their fur after returning from a trip outside.

Eighth, ensure that your pets stay indoors if their coats are not too thick or if they are not used to temperatures that are too cold. A pet can experience hypothermia if exposed to very cold weather and if left unprotected. Ninth, get yourself a mobile space heater that has an automatic shut off function if tipped over. Pets can start a fire at home if left unattended with a mobile space heater. Lastly, dogs tend to go in search of warm places in the winter and are thus in danger of getting lost and you should thus keep a close watch on them.

Tips for your Pet Care:

If one owns a small puppy or an older dog, try to keep him inside, so as to provide protection from cold, as they are very sensitive towards weather. For grown ups limit the time of keeping dog outside in cold air.

Winter is a time for great fun and distress. But consider buying booties for your dog when he walks on snow or ice. It will provide him little warmth.

PostHeaderIcon Dealing With Cat’s Bad Breath

Unlike Humans, Cat’s bad breath issue is also an alarming and stinky one: it tends to be caused by the activities of bacteria in the mouth that break down proteins and release sulphur compounds into the air. Sulphur smells bad, so breath that contains sulphur compounds smells bad also. In cats, the bacteria that cause the problem tend to be associated with a build up of tartar on the teeth. Tartar is a coating composed of food particles, bacteria, and minerals.

To cure cat bad breath, it’s helpful to try to remove the tartar that has built upon the cat’s teeth. Some pet foods are formulated to help reduce tartar by
producing mechanical friction that scrapes tartar off, or by including an enzyme
that helps to dissolve it. Pet treats are also commonly marketed as tartar
fighters in one way or another. If the build up of tartar on the cat’s teeth is
extensive, it might be necessary to pay to have a professional cleaning. When the tartar is removed, the cat bad breath should go away.
Some people are able to clean their cat’s teeth at home. Animal toothpastes are available in meat flavours – the mechanical brushing is important for removing tartar, but some of these toothpastes also contain enzymes that dissolve the tartar, so just getting it on the teeth regularly will help a bit to cure cat bad breath. Toothbrushes and tooth scrapers are also available. It is a fortunate cat owner whose cat will tolerate this kind of attention: start early with your cat to prevent the build up of tartar in the first place, and avoid cat bad breath later. Another approach is to try to decrease the number of bacteria in the cat’s mouth that are producing the bad smell. Just as chlorhexidine and other antibacterial are helpful for humans, these substances can be added to a pet’s water or sprayed directly on the teeth to combat cat bad breath. Alternative products are also available that treat the problem by fighting the bacteria. These remedies don’ t remove the tartar however, so they won’t permanently cure cat bad breath – a combination of a bacteria-fighting product, with a mechanical means of tartar removal might be the best approach.

Keep in mind that, like people, cats sometimes have an odour in the mouth that is not coming from the mouth: kidney and liver disease are two things that cause cat bad breath. Take your cat to your veterinarian if your cat has a consistent problem, so that a complete examination can be done. Even if the problem does originate in the mouth, treatment under the watchful eye of a veterinarian is important because problems in the mouth can lead to other serious health problems later.
