Travelling With Pets
To take or not to take her, that’s the question…
It is indeed one of the biggest dilemmas that all pet owners face when they travel. You don’t want to leave your pet behind as you enjoy a holiday, but the thought of travelling around with her makes you really nervous and anxious. Then, here we offer you a simple guide to plan a hassle free travel with your pet.
The first and foremost step in the direction would be to check whether the place you are travelling to allows pets. Because if it doesn’t then there isn’t any option at all. But let’s hope for the best and consider the situation wherein pets are allowed. In that case you have to prepare well for your pet’s travel.
- One of the first things you’ll need to buy is a pet carrier, more precisely a good pet carrier. The one that allows you to stand, sit and lie down comfortably, and breathe well. You also have to make the pet accustomed to the pet carrier by feeding her in the carrier itself, and letting her sleep in it.
- The next important factor to consider is your mode of travel. And you have to make necessary preparations for that first. If you will be travelling by car, again you should opt for accustoming your pet by taking her along for short trips.
- If you will be flying, then check all details and relevant issues with the airlines. Some airlines do not allow pets to travel in extreme conditions, which is actually not safe for your pet.
- You should also consider not travelling during peak hours as overcrowded areas may make your pet nervous.
Medical Precautions:
- You must check all medical records and find out if your pet has any medical conditions. You need to consult a veterinarian and get all necessary medications that you might need during the travel.
- If your pet is on a therapeutic diet, carry it along. Don’t take chances; it is worth carrying an extra pack also.
- If you are travelling to a place wherein the pet requires vaccination, make sure to get the pet vaccine.
- Sedation is not a preferred option but your pet may require it so you have to keep your veterinarian close at hand.
- You must also carry medical records in case of emergency.
- Your pet’s own veterinarian’s number must be kept in handy in case you may require.
Packing List:
You must understand that your pet’s packing list is more important than your packing list. So be very careful. Any item missing might land you in big time trouble. Sample a must-have packing list below:
- Food items at least until you reach the destination.
- Your pet’s clothing if she wears one.
- Toys, towel, medicines and other stuff that makes your pet feel at home.
You need to take other precautions as well but that should not keep you from travelling with the pet. So brace up and have a good travel with your pet.
Pet Adoption
“A house is not a home without a pet.”
I guess most of agree to that, even if our home is still a house! Most of us (if not all) would love having pet(s), but starting out is a difficult task. Finding the right pet from the right place is full of hiccups but once you succeed at it, few things can supersede this experience.
But even as we decide to have a pet, cats and dogs tops our list. The extended list inevitably ends at fishes and birds. Here I would like to remind that – there are many other animals who can be great pets and are probably more in need of love and affection. Rabbits, sugar gliders, hamsters, ferrets, chinchillas and rats (remember Stuart Little) are few indoor pets you may consider before finalizing on cats and dogs. And if you can afford it, then horses (start with foals) are also a great option. In any case you must take into consideration other factors such as
ü the space you have,
ü the time you can spend upon your pet,
ü your family size and their preference, and
ü the money you can afford for its vet bills.
Finally when you have zeroed down on the pet you want to have, the next question to contemplate is where to get the pets from? Reaching the nearest pet store is certainly the easiest way, but consider adopting a pet instead of buying one. Pet adoption is about taking the guardianship of abandoned or rescued pets.
Most probably these pets will not belong to the high breed you might have been wanting to buy, but isn’t it worth rescuing a helpless animal desperately in need of love, than going for a high bred one? But if your heart is still stuck upon a particular breed then you get your pet from a breed rescue organization, which are lesser in number in the rescue organization, but they are not completely unheard of either.
The statistics related to abandoned and stray animals, which often need to be killed due to overpopulation is heart-rending. The condition can improve if and only if we take to adopting pets. On the hindsight, pet adoption has many benefits for the owner as well. Stray or abandoned pets are almost always mixed bred and hence they have little chances of inbreeding. This in turn implies less inherited genetic diseases and lower vet bills. But don’t forget to get your pets properly vaccined, since that remains as important as ever.
The best part is that you don’t have to labor much to adopt a pet of your choice because the rescue organizations are available online and it has become easier than ever to adopt a pet. The Shelter Pet Project, Blue Cross of India, ASPCA, Adopt a Pet, and Adopt a Pet (Australia) are few organization that you may get in touch with to adopt a pet.
Finally I would like to reiterate Immanual Kant’s remark, “We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals”. So let your heart stand out and make a difference…
A Complaisant Pet- Rabbit
Once you have decided to have a rabbit as a pet, you should decide the colour of the rabbit as they come in lot of varieties. When finalized, you must decide on the cage or its home. You should purchase a cage that allows the rabbit to fully stretch its hind legs without any obstruction. Make sure that there is some extra space to accommodate a litter box, which include space for the food and water.
Rabbits have got a very sensitive gastrointestinal tract. They are herbivores and their primary diet consists of a variety of grass and leaves. Wild rabbits also enjoy the seasonal flower or fruit. You need not worry about the rabbit spoiling its teeth with the constant chewing and munching as rabbit teeth grow constantly which completely eliminates the possibility of teeth destruction. The proper diet will not only guarantee that your rabbit is in the summit of health, but also reduce your veterinary bills.
Rabbits are very affectionate and loving, but could get really aggressive and tottering at times. Many have got the wrong conception that a pet rabbit can be picked up and cuddled. But in case of pet rabbits it is just the contrast – even the slightest mishandling of your pet rabbit could prove dangerous ultimately fracturing its bone.
A rabbit always needs to be active. Rabbits are enamoured to jumping and running around. This helps to keep their minds active and alert and ultimately helps in eliminating a lot of sickness that will be obvious if they are confined to the cage.
You always need to watch out for abnormal behaviour in your rabbit. If you notice something eccentric like sudden loss in appetite, a sudden weight loss, suddenly wanting to be confined to the cage, extremely aggressive behaviour, and just about anything that may pertain to abnormality then you must visit the doctor and ensure your pet’s safety.
